How We Live

Bergen Folk High School has seven dormitory buildings. Each building has between eight and twelve double rooms. Usually, two rooms share a bathroom and toilet. We have only a limited number of single rooms. If you would like a single room, an additional fee applies. Each dormitory has a washing machine and tumble dryer, a small kitchen with cooking facilities and a refrigerator, as well as a comfortable common room. Students are responsible for keeping both their own rooms and the shared areas clean.

Dormitory and facilities

All main meals are prepared in the school’s large kitchen by skilled chefs and eaten together in the school’s cozy dining hall.

The school also has a large student/teaching kitchen where you and your fellow students can meet and cook food for fun occasions, whether it’s for the dormitory, for your program, or maybe just you and some good friends who want to have a nice time with some homemade food.

In the school’s surrounding areas, there are many beautiful hiking trails whether you want to go to the mountains or use the small roads and trails in the school’s immediate vicinity.

The school has a sports hall, gymnasium, and fitness room available to students. Throughout the school year we have elective courses that offer you training and outdoor experiences.

Åsane’s highest mountain, Hylkjeveten (486 meters above sea level), is located in the school’s immediate vicinity and is a popular summit hike for many of the school’s students. Every year we have competitions about which students and which classes have the most trips to the top during the school year.

If you want, you also get the opportunity to test your fitness and endurance in the uphill race “Stoltzen opp” (Stoltzekleiven up). A hiking trail that starts in Sandviken and goes steeply upward to the top of Sandviksfjellet, which is one of the 7 mountains that surround Bergen.

The school's kitchen

In the kitchen we are 3 chefs who all serve you good, varied, and nutritious food. We make almost everything from scratch and are proud to say that we make all food from scratch in addition to baking bread, buns, and cakes ourselves.

As much as possible, we make seasonal food and preferably with local ingredients. The menu ranges from traditional dishes to more modern dishes and fast food, often with input from students.

The chefs aim for the meal to be experienced as the highlight of the day. We naturally accommodate allergies and other various considerations.

Yes, for a small additional fee, you can have a single room. You can tick the box for a single room in your application or contact us directly.

We have seven dormitories, all located right next to the school building.

The rooms are approx. 12m², and most of the rooms have two beds, a wardrobe, a desk, a couple of chairs and a table or a chest of drawers. In two of our dormitories there is also a sink in the rooms

If you know someone you would like to share a room with, you can contact us before the start of the school year, and we will try to place you in the same room.

There is no curfew, but you must notify the supervising teacher if there are nights you do not sleep at the school.

Yes, but we have different types of beds in the different dormitories, so we cannot provide exact measurements.

The kitchen emphasizes varied and healthy food. Breakfast and supper are usually bread with different types of toppings.
Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, students and staff have a common lunch. Then it is usually served, salad, soup, porridge or leftovers in addition to bread.
On Wednesdays and Fridays, students must pack a lunch at breakfast to have for lunch.

No, you don’t have to, but since you pay for the food, it may be a good idea to get as many of the meals as possible. If you have a special diet, it is important that you notify the kitchen of absence at dinner well in advance.

Yes. The school has some available rooms that can be used for overnight guests if needed. The price for accommodation is NOK 400/500, depending on whether the guest is family or a friend.

There is a free weekend approximately every fourth weekend.

No, the school is your home even on free weekends. The school is closed during the autumn, Christmas, winter and Easter holidays, and during these holidays you must leave the school

We admit students right up to the start of the school year, and the room allocation is therefore not entirely clear until you arrive at the school. If you have someone you want to share a room with, please let us know as soon as possible.

Yes, there is.

Yes. We try to ensure an even distribution of students from the different study programmes across all dormitories.

You must bring a duvet and pillow, duvet cover, sheet and pillowcase for the bed. In addition, you must bring towels and possibly things that make the room a little personal. You use sticky tac/lærertyggis/putty to hang things on the wall. There is limited closet space in the rooms, so you don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe.
You can use sticky tack on the walls, but do not hammer in nails or thumbtacks.
Yes, you clean rooms, common rooms and classrooms yourself.
We always encourage new students to give each other some time to get to know each other, and to adapt to each other. Should it turn out that some absolutely do not fit together, we will try to find a good solution.

Yes. Each dormitory has a TV in the common area.

Yes, there is wireless network throughout the school.

Each dormitory has both a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
Åsane folkehøgskole’s kitchen has good experience with students with special diets, and is used to handling most allergies. Remember to inform us about special needs in your application so that we can prepare for your arrival. If you receive public support to cover expenses for a special type of diet or food, you must expect to pay a little extra to the school.
Spar Hylkje and Kiwi Hylkje are about 1 kilometer from the school. At Spar you can also send mail, and this is where you pick up any packages. If you need something other than groceries, there are several centers in Åsane.

Yes, Åsane folkehøgskole has plenty of parking space for those of you who bring your own car.
